This harbor was built with municipal, state, and federal funds; the Atlantic Highland’s Lions Club supplied the vision and determination. Today, the municipal harbor is the largest on the East Coast, home to 715 craft including high-speed ferry service to New York City In 1962, the existing Central Railroad of New Jersey pier was destroyed by fire. Since 1973, the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society has worked to build awareness of our common past through a variety of historical and cultural programs offered throughout the year. < Back Atlantic Highlands Historical Society 732-291-1861 Built in 1893 by wealthy New York merchant Adolph Strauss, the Strauss Mansion is a 21-room Victorian era Queen Anne-style “cottage” erected on the Atlantic Highlands hillside. Stunning views of New York City, the harbor, and Sandy Hook, can be seen from the third floor Tower Room. The museum is now open for free self-guided tours every Sunday from 12 - 4 PM, April through November. Exhibits include Victorian-era period displays, a room dedicated to the history of the Lenni Lenape, collections of local history items, and a vast newspaper archives and library. At Peace Pointe we aim to make the connection between animal advocacy, animal rescue, and plant-based living. Peace Pointe intends to build a cruelty-free animal rescue, while promoting earth-friendly actions such as gardening for wildlife, service in our local communities to clean up or preserve our remaining natural spaces, promote local vegan businesses and fellow 501(c)3 animal rescues. < Back Peace Pointe O ne day we will open the doors to an animal sanctuary, rescue & cruelty-free, creative oasis: Peace Pointe . Secondary to the goal of finding animals loving homes and promoting cruelty-free living, but almost as important to us, is bringing together a community of animal-loving people and neighbors. You will be able to rest easy here knowing that everything being sold will be from local small businesses who care about their impact on nature and animals. Workers will share in profits, so that the goal of kindness and community always remains at the forefront. The Rescue will focus on building families, not just ‘placing pets’. Once you adopt from Peace Pointe you are forever in our family and will always find the help and support you need as you embark on animal parenthood or stewardship. The natural spaces will serve as wildlife refuge and pollinator sanctuaries. The companion animals we love so much are brothers and sisters to all animals, just as they are to you and I. Local families needing medical care for their animals could rely on our contributors to keep their families together - while keeping our collective peace.
