New Jersey Blind Citizens Association’s was founded originally as the NJ Blind Men’s Club by
four courageous men 1910. In 1929, the men created an innovative camp like program on the
shores of Leonardo that provided training in independent living skills for blind and visually
impaired men from all over the State of NJ. It also allowed opportunities for socialization,
recreational activities, and resources to assist them in living healthier, independent lives. It was
there the men also learned how to swim, fish, hike and go boating and forget, at least for a
while, they were blind. The men quickly named it “Camp Happiness” and became part of the
area’s history.
Camp Happiness is celebrating its 95th year of providing free creative programming,
wellness, educational forums, and socialization opportunities for the blind and visually impaired.
NJBCA is a non-sectarian, tax-exempt organization registered with the
state of New Jersey. The generosity of donors, events and community grant support the agency. It does not receive any government funding.
